Welcome to the Second European Open Scrabble Championship, organized by Amy Byrne of Tilefish and sponsored by Seiko UK, Tilefish, Dell, Intercomp, Scotts Supermarket, ProPrint, Vascas, the Malta Tourism Authority, Sports Malta and Alliance Cruises. (Click the sponsor logos above to visit their websites, and try to guess what they all have to do with Scrabble.) This is John Chew, and I'll be posting brief reports each round, in between looking after the computers and photography for the event.

The William Shakespeare room here at the Hotel Victoria in Sliema, Malta is ready for players as of 10:00 A.M. Registration starts at 11:30, and round 1 at 13:00. The player rosters have yet to be finalized, but we know that they'll be playing in two divisions, and it looks very likely that each division will begin by playing a long round robin before filling out the rest of the four-day 32-round schedule with modified Swiss (Chew) pairings.
