Things got off to a leisurely start, as is not uncommon in international tournaments, where it was still difficult to tell at the end of the official registration period who would be playing, who had decided at the last minute not to come, and who was delayed in transit. We posted our best guess as to the pairings, then repaired a few people whose opponents were missing, then re-repaired them when a latecomer arrived. Julie Tate (Sco) very obligingly alternated between playing whomever was free, and working as a game recorder.

Julie's husband, Raymond Tate (Sco), reports that for the second time in 17 years, he got all ten power tiles, against a fellow Scot, Margaret Armstrong (Sco). His early 504-342 win boosted him into first place on the scoreboard, and he and Julie (thanks to her +150 bye) held the top two places for several minutes, until Cecil Muscat (MLT), and eventually Chinedu Okwelogu (NGA), Theresa Brousson (MLT) and Vincent Boyle (Sco) overtook them.

Simon Gillam (Sco) held ?EIKLRS and made a beautiful nine-letter bingo through HA.

Commentary and colour are being substantially delayed this round due to network problems. The hotel IT person is working on switching us from their flaky WiFi network to wired connections as I write this, at the beginning of round 2.
